Food is, of course, one of the greatest experiences binding a family together. But the real culinary jackpot hasn't been well-chronicled, until now. It turns out certain homemade meals are also ideal for spooning in the key ingredient for happy, resilient and thriving families. We're talking about VIRTUES-important qualities like love, honesty and resourcefulness. Simply put, specific recipes can serve up specific virtues. By using a new technique known as "Virtues Cooking," you can pair a recipe with a virtue. And by experimenting with Virtues Cooking, you nourish not only a child's stomach but also heart and spirit, and all-important character. You can strengthen your family. You can course-correct and see results right away. The Virtues-Cooking technique is really quite fun. You just focus on a virtue, cook up an appropriate recipe that reinforces that virtue... and make the idea sizzle and stick. This 294-page, 8 x 10-inch family "keepsake" book can change your life. It is filled with delicious recipes (42 in all) and engaging stories, inspirational quotes, beautiful photos and original whimsical art.The Virtues of Cooking is part inspirational how-to, part culinary memoir, part cookbook. It's an unconventional recipe for a good life.

The Virtues of Cooking, by Elinor Allcott Griffith, altered my traditional view of a cookbook. I found the recipes to be unique, the illustrations to be quirky, and the cooking tips and behind-the-scenes stories to be inspirational, informative and entertaining. I knew there was something special going on when the recipes were not grouped in the usual categories of Appetizers, Main Courses and Desserts. Instead, her forty recipes were arranged within virtues, including Patience, Curiosity and Courage. For example, Worth-the-Wait Turkey Roast will instill Patience while waiting for the turkey in the oven to be served. Eggplant Parmesan will foster Curiosity in finicky eaters who will find the aroma and presentation so irresistible they will want to give this dish a try. And when life threw the author a curveball, she reinvented herself by finding the Courage to organize cooking classes at gourmet landmarks in Italy and France, including the kitchen of Julia Childs.
The use of food to uplift family is a take on cooking I have not seen before. One example is encouraging the kids to assist in meal preparation by making it fun, such a baking loaves of Friendship Bread in flowerpots. By engaging children in this manner, I see how they might put their phones, tablets and games aside, and actually sit down and share a meal with the rest of the family. What a novel idea.

The Virtues of Cooking Elinor Allcott Griffith 9781320535199 Books Reviews
As a new mother, I loved how The Virtues of Cooking tells stories about the importance of coming to the table to create memories and a sense of wholeness. The coveted passed-through-the-generations recipes have something for everyone and everyone will find something familiar in the stories that Elinor Griffith vividly shares. I can't wait to make memories and delicious food.
Our book club that reads books that connect to our spirit and living a spiritual life has been reading The Virtues of Cooking book. It has inspired wonderful conversations, a few needed tears and lots of heartfelt and loving conversations. Can't wait for our next discussion!
What a terrific legacy Elinor Allcott Griffith has cooked up with her stories and recipes that entertain and enliven her gentle lessons of warmth, family, and values! Each recipe comes with a wonderful life story leading up to it, illustrating one of the 28 virtues that make up a good life. The most evident virtue, laced liberally throughout The Virtues of Cooking, is "humor." A few salty tears are sprinkled in, too.
I lived vicariously with the Allcott Griffiths as the North Carolina–born-and-bred author shares virtue-themed anecdotes about her artistic, quirky parents, the interesting Allcott siblings (especially the irrepressible Gene), her early days with her Canadian husband, Peter, and their two children, her longtime career as a Reader's Digest magazine editor, her world travels to many wonderful foodie havens, and all the other rites of passage of a full family life.
Each life stage comes with lessons and recipes. For instance I learned the two most important words for a successful marriage (read page 225 to find out), copied out a fool-proof recipe for cooking duck breasts (a poultry I've always been scared of ruining) and, near and dear to my heart, read out loud a wonderful Irish blessing that the author throws in just for good measure in the middle of the book.
There's so much to linger over in THE VIRTUES OF COOKING, from all the famous quotes in the margins to the more than 50 time-tested recipes with mouth-watering photos spanning from gooey chocolate cupcakes to a full-on turkey roast. But the thing that makes this book most special are the charming drawings throughout by the author's talented art professor father. These jaunty sketches really capture the sweet flavor of growing up in a fun family.
This unique book was a fun read for me, a non-chef, and I will buy a copy for my sister to inspire her to cook with her 10-year-old. But I really want to give it to two of my aunts who raised their successful families on wonderful meals. They will recognize a kindred soul in Elinor Allcott Griffith.
Amazing stories of life and delicious recipes. One that everyone will love!!!
